The LYBL story begins with the making of an exquisite, labour-intensive, hand knitted king-size throw – the rare and really soft kind that drapes effortlessly across your bed. The kind that has been created as a labour of love by gentle and patient hands and has enjoyed the mindful attention of its creator. The kind that will see many lifetimes, if treated well. A luxurious throw that will have many chapters to its story.

This beautiful hand-crafted blanket evoked the memory of a vanishing era – where handing pieces of high sentimental value down to the next generations was practiced and where “old” things were still perceived to bring value to contemporary times. Where the value associated with a family heirloom – be it an antique desk lamp or desk, an occasional chair, a cherished recipe book, a hand-crafted table or a grandmother’s wedding dress – was not necessarily associated with its monetary cost but more with the value derived from sentiment and the “built to last” characteristic associated with quality workmanship.

The endeavour of championing the rebirth of an era of new nostalgia ignited the birth of LYBL.

LYBL is an on-line boutique with roots in South Africa, that seeks to rekindle the appreciation and accessibility of a range of crafted heirlooms and collectibles. It is curated by a mother and daughter team who champion the meaningful craft of making nostalgic and familial favourites and encourage respecting and embracing superior quality as a way of life. Their desire is to cultivate the value assigned to artisanal craftsmanship, not only with respect to longevity but also for its lighter environmental impact, when compared to the heartless process of mass-production.
